เมื่อวันที่ 13 ตุลาคม 2559 ที่ผ่านมา ภายหลังประกาศของสำนักพระราชวัง เรื่อง พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช มหิตลาธิเบศรามาธิบดี จักรีนฤบดินทร สยามมินทราธิราช บรมนาถบพิตร สวรรคต ยังความโศกเศร้าเสียใจมายังประชาชนชาวไทยทั่วทั้งประเทศ

18.47 น. หลังจากแถลงการณ์พระอาการ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ ฉบับที่ 38 ออกมายังไม่ครบ 24 ชั่วโมง แถลงการณ์สำนักพระราชวังฉบับใหม่ เรื่องประกาศพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช มหิตลาธิเบศรรามาธิบดี จักรีนฤบดิทร สยามมินทราธิราช บรมนาถบพิตร สวรรคต ได้ตามออกมา โดยในแถลงการณ์ดังกล่าวได้ระบุช่วงเวลาสุดท้ายที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯได้เสด็จเข้ารับการรักษาพระอาการประชวรที่โรงพยาบาลศิริราช ในวันศุกร์ที่ 3 ตุลาคม 2559 แต่ทรงมีพระอาการทรุดลงจนกระทั่งวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 13 ตุลาคม 2559 เวลา 15.52 น. เสด็จสวรรคตด้วยพระอาการสงบ สิริพระชนมพรรษาปีที่ 89 ทรงครองราชย์สมบัติได้ 70 ปี

19.00 น. พล.อ. ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้ออกแถลงการณ์ถึงการเสด็จสวรรคต และชักชวนประชาชนชาวไทยแสดงความจงรักภักดี ในการเจริญรอยตามพระยุคลบาท และสืบสานพระราชปณิธาน

โดยภารกิจสำคัญที่จะต้องดำเนินการในบัดนี้มี 2 ประการ คือ การดำเนินการให้เป็นไปตามรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย และตามกฎมณเฑียรบาล ว่าด้วยการสืบราชสันตติวงศ์ พุทธศักราช 2467 ตลอดจนตามพระราชประเพณีในส่วนของการสืบราชสันตติวงศ์ ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับ การปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นประมุขดำเนินต่อไปอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยรัฐบาลจะแจ้งไปยังสภานิติบัญญัติแห่งชาติว่าพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวในพระบรมโกศ ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อม สถาปนาพระรัชทายาทตามกฎมณเฑียรบาลไว้แล้ว เมื่อวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม 2515 จากนั้น สภานิติบัญญัติแห่งชาติจะดำเนินการในส่วนที่เกี่ยวข้องต่อไป

ความว่า ด้วยสำนักพระราชวัง จะเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนเข้าถวายน้ำสรงพระบรมศพพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช มหิตลาธิเบศรรามาธิบดี จักรีนฤบดินทร สยามมินทราธิราช บรมนาถบพิตร น้อมเกล้าน้อมกระหม่อมส่งเสด็จสู่สวรรคาลัย เบื้องหน้าพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ ซึ่งประดิษฐาน ณ ศาลาสหทัยสมาคม ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง วันศุกร์ที่ 14 ตุลาคม พุทธศักราช 2559 ตั้งแต่เวลา 8 โมง 30 นาที ถึงเวลา 12 นาฬิกา
